From the "Jersey Shore" to the Gulf Shore

As part of the South Eastern Conference, football is Ole Miss’ most prominent tradition. However, that is not the most important reason Cameron Cook, a sophomore broadcast journalism major, made his trek to attend college all the way from Long Hill, New Jersey.

“When I was looking at schools, Ole Miss football did catch my eye since we were pretty good back then,” Cook said. “But I didn’t decide to come here until I found out there was a hockey team.”

Cook has been playing hockey since he was 5 years old. Now a forward for the Ole Miss Hockey team, Cook loves being able to play because its reminds him of the North.

“I love the lifestyle and atmosphere of Oxford even though it is so different from New Jersey,” Cook said. “I especially miss the food.”

Back home, Cook’s family owns a pizzeria, Joe’s Pizzeria and Vittoria Ristorante, which is named after his mother’s parents who live in Italy. Knowing that he can come home every summer and have a place to work, as well as get free pizza, makes Cook at ease.

One of the more interesting parts of moving to the South for Cook was the stereotype of the Jersey Shore. Though Cook only lives 50 minutes away from the shore, he says that where he lives and most other places in New Jersey are dissimilar from the show.

“Most of the people on the show are from New York or Connecticut,” said Cook. “I come from a big Italian family, but they're not anything like the people on the show.”

Whether in the North or the South, Cook always has a place to call home.
