Bitter sweet goodbye to our own Southern gal

Sarah Rose Watkins

interviewed: Kandance Webley

New York City is considered the fashion capital of the America. However, Kandance Webley, a sophomore Marketing Communications major, has all the intentions to pursue her fashion dreams yet remain in a place dear to her heart: the south. She hopes to one day open her own boutique in Atlanta. “I want to sell and advertise my store. Mostly I want my store to stand out,” Webley explains.

Kandance’s road to her dreams began when she was deciding between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Her step dad felt Ole Miss was a better all around school. Even though Ole Miss doesn’t offer a design program, Kandance made the 2 and a half hour drive from her hometown, Madison, MS to Oxford. Down the road she decided that following her dreams as a fashion designer meant more to her. She concluded to enroll at Mississippi State in the fall to receive her degree in what her heart has always been set on, fashion. “I really do love Ole Miss. It is going to be so hard to leave, but I have to make decisions for myself.”

Still, Kandance is a family girl, and won’t be far from home. She listened to her step dad’s advice, and decided she needed to do what’s best for her. There are no hard feelings for her making the switch to the long time rival school. “Family is important to me. I face time with my 8 year old brother, Regal, every day. He gets so excited to see my face on the other end of the IPhone.” As Kandance packs her bag to go wear maroon and white next year, hopefully she will remember to design some blue and red game day dresses for her first choice school, when she hits it big in Atlanta as a designer.
